Zimbabwe's UNSC bid Is a mockery of justice for Mthwakazi: MRP Leader

Mthwakazi Republic Party (MRP) leader Mqondisi Moyo has condemned the Zimbabwean government's bid to secure a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), calling it a mockery in light of the country's record of human rights violations.

"MRP strongly condemns Zimbabwe's attempt to secure a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council. While such a seat is projected as a triumph of diplomacy, it is in reality a cynical bid for prestige that insults both the Mthwakazi people and the international community that stands for justice, truth, and peace," Moyo said.

He argued that UNSC membership offers visibility and influence on global matters of war and peace, but for Zanu-PF, it would serve only as a lifeline to polish its battered reputation while evading accountability for genocide, corruption, and repression.

Moyo noted that many senior Zanu-PF leaders remain under international travel restrictions due to human rights abuses and electoral fraud. He warned that a UNSC seat could be used to bypass these restrictions, as UN duties grant diplomatic access even to individuals otherwise barred from entering Western capitals.

"This move is not about advancing peace - it is about creating loopholes for elites to enjoy international exposure and legitimacy," he said.

Moyo cited Zimbabwe's history of exploiting international platforms for regime survival:

- African Union Chairmanship (2015): He claimed Robert Mugabe used the AU platform to shield himself from accountability and deflect attention from Zimbabwe's crises.
- SADC Leadership Roles: He accused Zimbabwe of manipulating regional processes to defend authoritarian practices, including rubber-stamping elections marred by violence and rigging.
- Peace and Security Forums: He said Zimbabwe's envoys have used these spaces to sanitise the regime's reputation while stifling opposition voices.

"This pattern demonstrates that Harare views international platforms as tools for self-preservation, not for justice, peace, or democracy. The UNSC would be no different," Moyo said.

He added that Zanu-PF is paralysed by succession battles and corruption, with leaders more focused on personal power struggles than resolving national issues.

"Meanwhile, the ghosts of the Gukurahundi genocide, which claimed an estimated 300,000 lives in Matabeleland and the Midlands, continue to haunt the conscience of the nation. Half-hearted ‘dialogues' on Gukurahundi are nothing more than public relations exercises designed to avoid accountability," he said.

"The regime knows that securing international prestige, however hollow, can help mask these realities. But the truth cannot be buried: Zimbabwe has failed its people and cannot be entrusted with the role of global peace-broker."
