Three women, including two sisters of the notorious Vumbunu brothers, appeared before Bulawayo Regional Magistrate Archie Wochiwunga yesterday, facing armed robbery charges involving US$25,840.
The accused, Sekai Vumbunu, Georgina Vumbunu, and Florence Chisiri, only confirmed their personal details and the allegations during the hearing. They were remanded in custody until October 31, 2025. Georgina Vumbunu, who is wheelchair-bound, pleaded for bail, citing the need to care for her young children. The magistrate denied her request, noting the seriousness of the charges, and advised that any application for bail should be made at the Bulawayo High Court.
The State, represented by Nomthandazo Mafu, told the court that the women were part of a larger criminal network operating in and around the city. Sekai Vumbunu is alleged to have used the alias Edith Dube to conceal her identity. On October 12, 2025, the trio reportedly supplied information to Nekimiya Dladla and Simon Dube, who allegedly intercepted a woman on her way to Mossel House. Armed with guns, the two men threatened her and stole US$1,630. During the incident, they allegedly searched the woman's residence and took an additional US$23,160 along with two wedding rings valued at US$1,050.
Dladla and Dube are further linked to a series of armed robberies, including raids at Nkolozi Investments, a bureau de change at the CIPF Building, and a restaurant at the corner of Fife Street and 12th Avenue, where significant sums of cash were stolen. Investigations by the Homicide Section led to Dladla's arrest, after which he implicated Dube and the Vumbunu sisters, resulting in their subsequent arrests.
The latest developments have reignited public interest in the Vumbunu crime family, which gained national notoriety following the capture of brothers Elijah and Abraham Vumbunu, dubbed the "terror twins," for their alleged involvement in the US$4 million Ecobank heist last year. Raised in Bulawayo's Mzilikazi suburb, the brothers have a long history of organised crime ranging from car-jacking to gold heists and violent home invasions. Abraham, who had recently been released from a 14-year prison sentence, allegedly rejoined his brother in planning the Ecobank robbery just two weeks after his release.
Authorities continue to investigate the network linked to the Vumbunu family as the case unfolds, signaling a firm stance against organised crime in Bulawayo.
