PLUMTREE - A 37-year-old woman from Plumtree has been remanded in custody after allegedly assaulting her three-year-old daughter to death for defecating on herself.
Simangele Ncube appeared before Plumtree magistrate Joshua Nembaware, who did not ask her to plead to the murder charge. She was remanded to November 21.
Prosecutor Sheila Nyathi told the court that on September 2, Ncube struck her daughter, Easy Mpande, on the head with a plastic dish after the child soiled herself. The following day, she allegedly beat the child all over her body with an electric cable, resulting in her death on the spot.
Neighbours, disturbed by the incident, performed a citizen's arrest and handed Ncube over to the police.
The case has sparked outrage and renewed calls for stronger child protection measures in Zimbabwe.
