Three police officers from Dzivarasekwa Police Station appeared in Harare Magistrates Court yesterday, charged with criminal abuse of office.
The accused, Kevin Mareyanadzo (37), Likwa Moyo (40), and Vongai Munapo (33), were each granted US$150 bail by Magistrate Jessie Kufa and remanded to February 2. They were instructed not to interfere with witnesses until the case is concluded.
According to the prosecution, members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police Harare Provincial Anti-Corruption Team received a tip-off that officers were illegally collecting fingerprints from members of the public at the basement parking lot of Customs House, at the corner of Mayor Urimbo Terrace and South Avenue. Acting on this information, the team found Mareyanadzo with six civilians completing fingerprint forms for police clearances.
Investigations revealed that the accused demanded US$10 per person for the fingerprinting service. A search of Mareyanadzo's vehicle uncovered makeshift fingerprinting equipment and copies of fingerprints, allegedly vetted.
During questioning, Mareyanadzo implicated Moyo and Munapo, leading to their arrests. It was also noted that Mareyanadzo is stationed at Dzivarasekwa Police Station, not Harare Central, where the incident took place.
