Penhalonga man jailed for raping juvenile

The Mutare Regional Magistrates’ Court has sentenced 38‑year‑old Cosmore Benito of Penhalonga to 15 years in prison for sexually assaulting an eight‑year‑old Grade 2 pupil.

The court heard that on 25 October 2025, the child was bathing at home when Benito entered the house and moved into a bedroom separated only by a curtain. The victim asked him to leave, but he refused. He later carried the child behind the curtain and assaulted her. When she tried to escape and screamed for help, he overpowered her and threatened to kill her if she told anyone.

The offence came to light when the victim’s aunt visited and noticed the child was struggling to walk. Upon examining her, she detected signs of abuse and questioned the child, who identified Benito as the perpetrator. A police report was filed, leading to his arrest.

The court emphasised that crimes against children carry severe consequences and urged communities to remain vigilant in protecting minors from sexual predators.
