Investigative journalist Hopewell Chin'ono has accused several opposition leaders of secretly supporting moves to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa's term to 2030, despite publicly claiming to oppose the plan.
Chin'ono's remarks come amid a surge in state‑linked violence against activists and politicians who openly reject the proposed constitutional amendments. National Constitutional Assembly leader Lovemore Madhuku is the latest to be targeted after he was assaulted while mobilising against the changes.
Posting on his X account, Chin'ono said many opposition figures were "pro‑2030" despite their public statements.
"A lot of so‑called opposition leaders are pro‑2030. They only pretend to speak against it when pressured, but otherwise they are right behind it," he wrote. "That is why they cannot speak out against the use of violence against those who openly reject 2030."
Chin'ono said Zanu PF faced no meaningful resistance from the current opposition.
"As I have always said, Zanu PF is assured of ruling Zimbabwe for at least another seven years without any real worry from opposition forces," he said.
He argued that the only real opposition to Mnangagwa's agenda existed within Zanu PF itself, not among what he described as "bought opposition charlatans".
"We might not like him, but we cannot deny the fact that Emmerson Mnangagwa is a strategist. The dismantling of the opposition was not accidental - it was strategically planned, and we now effectively have a one‑party state," he said.
Chin'ono said the remaining opposition leaders were "bogus" and existed only to maintain the illusion of political competition.
"What remains are bogus opposition leaders on paper, whose job is to keep their supporters hoping - to sell hope while doing nothing to materially change the fortunes of the suffering masses," he said.
He added that he had warned about this as far back as 2022.
"I told you in 2022, and many insulted me. At least many have now opened their eyes," he said.
