Emmerson Mnangagwa on Wednesday made an emphatic call for unity within Zanu PF as internal divisions intensify over controversial plans to extend his stay in office beyond constitutional limits.

Addressing a Politburo meeting in Harare, Mnangagwa's remarks came against the backdrop of growing factional tensions within the ruling party, with rival camps reportedly battling over the proposed Constitutional Amendment Bill 3.

The proposed amendment is understood to form part of efforts by Mnangagwa loyalists to extend the president's term from five years to seven years, a move critics within and outside the party have characterised as a bid to secure a de facto third term.

However, the initiative has reportedly encountered strong resistance from a faction aligned to Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga, which is said to oppose any attempts to prolong Mnangagwa's rule beyond the current constitutional framework.

Despite the deepening cracks within the party, Mnangagwa praised Zanu PF structures for what he described as their dedication and discipline.

"I once again express my appreciation to you, the politburo and all grassroots structures of our party for the dedication, zeal and focus being demonstrated in the execution of party work," Mnangagwa told party leaders.

He said the party's collective efforts were helping to strengthen Zanu PF institutions and expand its support base.

"Let us remain united, vigilant and resolute as we consolidate the gains of the people's revolution and the national development agenda," he added.

Mnangagwa insisted that his administration remained committed to national development despite political and economic pressures.

"To this end, I want to emphasise that under the second republic, Zanu PF will never divert from the ongoing agenda to unite, develop and lead the nation towards a better life for all, no matter the challenges," he said.

The president also reflected on the country's recent 46th Independence Day commemorations held in Maphisa, commending party supporters for what he called their "singleness of purpose" during the celebrations.

According to Mnangagwa, the strong attendance at the event demonstrated Zimbabweans' appreciation of the country's sovereignty and independence.
