Shangani residents get brick boost as Nkomo fulfils pledge

Five Shangani residents who received residential stands between 2018 and 2023 have received a major boost towards constructing their homes after former Ward 23 councillor Sikhanyisiwe Nkomo donated 10 000 bricks to the beneficiaries.
The bricks were delivered to Shangani on Tuesday morning, with each of the five beneficiaries receiving 2 000 red solid common bricks. The bricks, purchased from Baocheng Bricks (formerly Macdonald Bricks) in Bulawayo, cost US$0.30 each, while Nkomo reportedly covered transportation costs for the 100‑kilometre consignment from Bulawayo to Shangani using her own resources.
The beneficiaries are Mandlenkosi “Bhova” Ncube, Makhosi Xaba, Joseph Masuku, Sithobekile Jele and Grace Jamali. They are among 30 residents who were allocated residential stands during Nkomo’s tenure as Ward 23 councillor.
Speaking after the handover, Nkomo said the donation fulfilled a pledge she had made. “These five residents standing with me today are some of the 30 residents I assisted to benefit from residential stands during my term of office,” she said. “Seeing that they were still struggling to lay the foundation, I pledged to buy them bricks. Today I have fulfilled that pledge.”
Nkomo said the initiative was meant to complement national efforts under Vision 2030 by helping ordinary families build decent homes.
The handover was met with emotional scenes, with beneficiaries expressing gratitude. Sithobekile Jele, Ward 23 Zanu PF Youth Chairperson and a Young Women4ED executive member, said she was overwhelmed. “I am speechless. I have no words for Cde Nkomo’s kind of love. I did not know where to start with the foundation stage, but God has intervened in a miraculous way.”
Young Women4ED member Grace Jamali also praised Nkomo. “Honestly speaking, she is an icon of this beautiful Insiza North. Very soon I will be a landlord because of her. Thank you. Well done, CAA3 Queen.”
For Mandlenkosi Ncube, the donation represented significant relief. “Hulumende is a great wonder to set eyes on. She is a hero. Thank you so much for lifting me and my family up. You are such a blessing from God who cares for the vulnerable in the whole constituency.”
The ceremony ended with beneficiaries and other speakers praising Nkomo’s intervention, describing it as a contribution towards home ownership and grassroots development in Insiza North.
The initiative comes amid broader Government efforts under Vision 2030 to improve access to housing and empower communities — a theme central to community infrastructure development and rural housing empowerment.
