Amputated human leg found at dump site

POLICE are investigating the discovery of an amputated human leg at a dumping site in Chitungwiza after the partially burnt body part was found wrapped in bandages.
The discovery was made yesterday by a woman who was scavenging for recyclable plastics at the municipal dumping site.
She alerted a Chitungwiza Municipality dumping site attendant, who subsequently contacted the authorities.
Police said the leg appeared to belong to an adult and may have been removed during an amputation procedure before being illegally disposed of at the site.
Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the incident.
"Police are investigating a case involving a human body part dumped at a dumping site in Chitungwiza," he said.
"On the scene, police found a human leg wrapped with bandages."
Chakanza said the leg was partially burnt and that police also found used syringes, gloves, bandages and other medical waste scattered around the site.
"The observations indicate that someone responsible for disposing clinical residue decided to dump and burn it at the dumping site," he said.
"The human leg is under police guard as investigations continue."
The discovery has raised suspicions of possible negligence by a private medical facility operating in the dormitory town, although no hospital has been identified or implicated by authorities at this stage.
People at the scene expressed concern over the disposal of potentially hazardous medical waste alongside ordinary refuse.
"When we came to pick plastics for sale today, we found the body part at the site," one man said.
"We strongly suspect one of the private hospitals is behind this. It is not only unhealthy but unprofessional to dispose clinical residues this way."
