Charumbira recalled from Chiefs' Council

Three senior Masvingo traditional leaders, Chief Charumbira, born Fortune Charumbira, Chief Chitanga, born Feleni Chauke, and Chief Nhema, born Rangarirai Bwawanda, have been recalled from the Chiefs' Council following a vote by provincial chiefs.
The motion was tabled by Chief Nemanwa, born Fungai Manjiva, during a meeting held at a local hotel in Masvingo on Monday.
Forty-two of the 45 chiefs who attended the Provincial Assembly reportedly voted in favour of the trio's removal. No reasons were given for the motion.
Chief Chitanga confirmed the development in a telephone interview with The Masvingo Mirror.
"Yes, we have been booted out. Forty-two out of 45 chiefs voted in favour of the motion," he said.
Chiefs who sit on the National Chiefs' Council are elected by traditional leaders at Provincial Assembly level. Members of the National Chiefs' Council can subsequently be elected to serve as Senators.
The recall could therefore affect the trio's prospects of continuing to serve in the Senate, although Chief Chitanga said the provincial chiefs' vote did not itself amount to a Senate recall.
On whether the three would remain Senators, he said: "Recalls are only done by the Senate."
Masvingo Minister of Provincial Affairs Ezra Chadzamira and Zanu PF provincial chairman Rabson Mavenyengwa were present at Monday's meeting.
Their presence has prompted speculation about the political backing behind the move, with one analyst suggesting that it could have received support from the highest levels of Government. However, no official statement has been made linking the Government or the Presidency to the recall.
The development comes after Chadzamira recently told a Zanu PF meeting that there would be "gnashing of teeth" following constitutional amendments contained in Bill Number 3.
The reasons behind the chiefs' removal were not disclosed during the meeting.
