A MBARE teenager has been arrested for reportedly sodomising a 12-year-old boy and ordering eight other boys to follow suit on several occasions since 2009.
Police said the suspect, aged 17, also faces charges of sodomising three other boys, a 16-year-old and two aged 14.
The three were sodomised at the same time with the 12-year-old.
The eight boys, who are aged between eight and 16, were yesterday summoned to Stodart Police Station to give statements in connection with the case.
Acting Harare provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Tarirai Dube confirmed the case yesterday.
She said sometime in 2009, the suspect saw four boys, including the 12-year-old who was later sodomised by eight others, at around 6pm warming themselves at a fire place near his father's firewood business and called them. He is alleged to have taken them into a room where he sodomised them.
The suspect gave US$3 to the 16-year-old and R5 each to the other three boys before releasing them.
It is alleged that sometime in December last year, the suspect called the 16-year-old while he was playing soccer before ordering him to sodomise the 12-year-old victim.
He is reported to have later called seven other boys aged between eight and 12 and ordered them to take turns to sodomise the same boy.
The matter came to light when one of the boys informed her mother last Friday. Police said the mother then inquired with the victim's mother who questioned her son and he confirmed the matter.
A report was then made to the police who are investigating the case.
When The Herald visited Stodart Police Station yesterday, the boys were waiting to be interviewed by the police's Victim Friendly Unit.
Some of the juveniles are likely to appear in court once investigations are completed.
Cases of sodomy appear to have increased among teenagers in recent months.
In November last year, an 11-year-old pupil at Waddilove Primary School in Marondera was convicted of sodomising a nine-year-old pupil at the same institution.
Marondera magistrate Ms Mavis Kadumba sentenced the boy to three years imprisonment, which was wholly suspended for five years, and three strokes of cane to be administered by a designated officer.
