Zimbabwe is reportedly trying to block former Nigerian President Olusegum Obasanjo from observing the country's July 31 harmonised elections.

Obasanjo who was expected to jet into the country yesterday as AU short term observer mission leader was said to have indefinitely postponed his arrival amid diplomatic shuttling between AU and the government over the matter.

Although details were still sketchy AU Commission chairperson Nkosazana Dhlamini-Zuma yesterday hinted Obasanjo would only be allowed to Harare if he was invited by the government.

Meanwhile, the former Nigerian President Obasanjo, yesterday, brushed aside reports that he had been dropped from the African Union, AU, Observer Mission to Zimbabwe's forthcoming general elections.

Speaking on telephone from China, where he is presently on a private mission, Obasanjo debunked the speculations, saying that he was headed for his assignment to Zimbabwe as head of the AU Observer Mission to monitor the July 31 elections.

Asked if he was still going to Zimbabwe yesterday, on telephone, Obasanjo quipped: "Who said I am not going?"
