The US$2 billion Beitbridge-Masvingo-Chirundu highway project is set to take off soon with government short listing three bids for consideration.
The committee on Beitbridge-Masvingo-Chirundu rehabilitation project chaired by Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa narrowed the bids for consideration from the initial 12 to three.
The Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Development, Dr Joram Gumbo, who is on a nationwide familiarisation tour, said the committee on the project is finalising the selection process, amid projections that the project will be delivered at a cost of around US$2 billion.
"Government has already declared that the winning contractor should engage locals and ensure that downstream industries benefit," said Dr Gumbo.
The progress made in the selection of the contractors and the agreement reached between the government and the ZimHighways consortium, which was initially awarded the tender, to terminate the contract, have come as good news for the Masvingo community.
Government has also set its sights on several road projects including the Beitbridge-Bulawayo-Victoria Falls highway with a view to transforming Zimbabwe into a regional transport and logistics hub.
The Beitbridge-Chirundu highway is the country's busiest and most economically significant route.
The highway is also part of the north-south corridor, one of the major links in the regional road network.
