Zimcodd says Zim needs re-branding

The Zimbabwe Coalition for debt and Development (Zimcodd) has said Zimbabwe needs serious re branding in order to attract tourists and recover its economy from doldrums.

The organisation said the country has an external Debt is over $10bn, total arrears could be over $5bn, gross domestic product of about $14bn and the current account deficit unsustainable at about 20% of GDP.

It advised the government to reduce cost of doing business, eradicate corruption, get rid of non-performing parastatals like Air Zimbabwe, focus on functionality rather than just ownership, repeal Indeginisation Act, indicating that 100% of zero is zero.

It also urged government to replace it with a model that is competitive and will achieve both increased FDI and real empowerment of our people with improved quality of life, Improve productivity and efficiency, enhance competitiveness, bridge supply gaps, shed off reliance on commodities through value addition and product beneficiation which will be driven by FDI and achieve Food Security.

The organisation said the nation must reduce dependence on imports,resolve the Energy crisis quickly, pursue the Regional Inga dam hydro project with vigour, pursue other sources of energy such as biogas with vigour, utilise solar energy, e.g. for gysers, abiding by Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agreements and increased Overseas Development Assistance.

"There must be increased Remittances from Diaspora by integrating them into Zimbabwean society including granting them the right to vote and implementing dual citizenship," said Zimcodd.

"Introducing robust investment vehicles for diaspora, lower the country risk factor, adoption of new technologies, rebrand Zimbabwe for increased tourism."
