Some 12 farmers at Oatlands Irrigation Scheme in Ward 13 Masvingo Rural were last week awarded with various prizes after a weed management competition that saw them being pitted against each other.

The farmers grew maize crop in February on a 0,1 hectare piece of land each and the crop were judged on various factors including weed management, crop standing, population, spacing, pest and disease control and use of fertilisers.

The Agritex extension officer for the area, Mercy Mudzitiri said the competition in which they planted SC513 Seedco medium variety was meant to motivate and inspire the farmers.

A field day was organised on Thursday last week to give awards and Kudakwashe Madungwe Mugabe came tops in the competition and she won several prizes donated by various companies and individuals. The second prize went to Munyaradzi Munyimo and the third prize went to Tinashe Chimwanda.

Hundreds of farmers were in attendance at the ceremony gathered to witness the event which was officiated by Ward 13 Agriculture Extension Officer Mercy Mudzitiri and Matubede Mudavanhu Chief Mugabe.

Prizes won were sponsored by Masvingo North MP Davis Marapira who also provided 50kg of meat and fuel to transport the prizes. The Veterinary distribution offered a knapsack sprayer. Stanely Nyoka the Provincial sales agronomist of Seedco Company in Zimbabwe gave a vote of thanks. Madzitire thanked the MP for his support for agriculture in her area.

"Farmers are happy with the support that they got from the MP otherwise we barely had prizes for the competition," she said.

The CEO of Masvingo Rural Council Martin Mumviru and other stakeholders such as Zadzamatura graced the occasion.
