A Kwekwe-based gold dealer's birthday celebrations turned into a nightmare at the weekend when five unidentified armed men robbed him of more than $100 000 at his party, police have said. Police said the gold dealer, Mr Kendros Mugabe (36), from Mbizo suburb, was at his home when he was approached by the five assailants who were armed with three pistols and a rifle.
Midlands police spokesperson Inspector Patrick Chademana confirmed the incident, which happened on Saturday at about 7pm in Mbizo suburb.
"On the day in question, Mr Mugabe was with his friends and family at his house in Mbizo having fun as they were celebrating his birthday," said Insp Chademana.
"He was approached by five unknown men who were armed with three pistols and a rifle. They force-marched him into his bedroom where he kept his money. The five suspects took cash amounting to $104 000 and went away. Mr Mugabe reported the matter to the police who attended to the scene. Investigations into the matter are still under way."
Police appealed to members of the public not to keep large amounts of money at home.
"We also appeal to members of the public who might have information leading to the arrest of the five unknown suspects to contact the nearest police station. They can also make use of our suggestion boxes," said Insp Chademana.
In another incident, two fuel attendants at Imbrex Garage, a service station in Kwekwe, were yesterday morning robbed of $271 by five people.
Insp Chademana said the incident happened at about 2.20am.
He said the fuel attendants, Ms Thembinkosi Furandi of Amaveni suburb, Kwekwe, and Mr Collins Madzinga (40), of Newtown suburb, were approached by one of the suspects who was driving a Nissan March, pink in colour.
"The car had no registration numbers. The suspect who was driving bought fuel for $5 and tendered $50. When Ms Furandi was about to give the driver his change, two more suspects came out of the vehicle. The two, suspects who were armed with pistols, ordered everyone to lie down," said Insp Chademana.
The Midlands police spokesperson said one of the armed suspects went on to demand cash from Ms Furandi and she surrendered $271 to the robbers.
"Mr Madzinga, who was in the attendant's room, came out armed with a pistol trying to react to the situation. He fired one shot but was overpowered by the suspects who took his pistol. The five suspects fled and the matter was reported to the police who attended to the scene. Investigations into the matter are still going on. We once again would want to appeal to members of the public who might have information on this matter to contact the nearest police station," he said.
Insp Chademana said the police were still to ascertain whether the two cases were related.
He said all the suspects involved in both cases were still at large.
