SADC Summit ends in Victoria Falls

The 34th SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government has ended in Victoria Falls, with the Chairperson of the bloc, President Robert Mugabe, giving closing remarks.
Cde Mugabe said they have had two busy days, which saw them coming up with important decisions that will take the SADC region to another level of development.
As he leads the bloc into a new term, which ends in August 2015 when Botswana takes over the chairmanship of the regional grouping, President Mugabe called for support from all member states for the SADC agenda to be achieved.
"The decisions taken here will only be meaningful to the people if we implement them. So I call for your support to steer the agenda of SADC forward and I know that together we can achieve the set objectives during this term," he said.
Cde Mugabe said he is happy that the SADC Summit had an appreciation of the abundant natural resources that member countries are endowed with, hence the need for value addition initiatives for the region to get more value from the resources.
On peace, the new SADC chairperson said member states must strive to promote unity and peace but must shun interference in internal affairs by owning and funding its own programmes and reducing dependence on international financiers.
President Mugabe wished Mozambique, Namibia and Botswana well ahead of elections in the three countries later this year.
He also thanked President Armando Guebuza of Mozambique and President Hifikepunye Pohamba of Namibia, who will be stepping down after two terms in office in their respective countries, for their roles for steering forward the SADC agendas and programmes during their terms in office.
He told all delegates who attended the summit to continue coming to Zimbabwe, whose tourist attractions such as the majestic Victoria Falls are a wonder to watch.
