20:03, 14 Jan - +263 7* *** ****: The fall of Alexandra Park School (Harare).
I am a concerned and upset parent at this school. Standards have been on free fall ever-since 2013 when the new head Mr Marume came on board. He came to the school at enrolment time in 2013 and that enrolment process was marred by many irregularities and allegations of bribery as the new head over enrolled by an extra class.
As a result of over enrolling 2014 had an extra class (1 gold) which had to use the library as a class and some kids sitting on the carpet.
This prompted parents and the SDC to call for an emergency general meeting in Feb 2014 & the head was lucky not to be assaulted as angry parents wanted answers about the bribery allegations and ballooning number of kids.
Marume was sent on forced leave as a result. However he is back and the year hasn't started well at Alexandra park school he has over enrolled again with more allegations of bribery, some kids with siblings didn't get a place. Some kids in both grade 1 classes are having to sit on the carpet bcoz there isn't any furniture to accommodate them.
Marume has also increased the number of kids in every grade. Alex park was built as a very small school with classes meant for 23-25 students now under his administration each class averages from 45-55 kids.
Some teachers at the school say he has political ambitions hence why the school has also seen an influx of kids whose parents are from the min of education, presidents office and Zanu pf referred.
The school is owed lots of money in levies and the main culprits are those who have come to the school through marume.
Feel free to visit the school to see for yourself how the state of affairs are unfolding and how kids are squashed up in their classes and some sitted on the floor.
This school was one of the last good gvt school left mainly as a result of the parents who have over the years sponsored the school and contributed towards its upkeep and now our efforts are going down the drain.
I am frothing right now and not sure how far down Marume wants to drag the school.
