Highlanders Academy 10 - 1 Amalanda
Highlanders under 18s were today crowned 2011 Bulawayo Metropolitan Province Serie A champions after a demolition act that saw them pummel hapless Amalanda into submission with a polished display worthy champions in a main curtain raiser to Bosso vs Blue Ribbon at Barbourfields stadium today. The Dumaza Dube led youngstars who have been a marvel to watch this season were aided in their quest for a championship by impressive Makhandeni City Pirates who held fort against defending Champions Bantu Rovers to restrict them to a goalless draw in a re-fixtured match played at Somhlolo stadium koBango Mpopoma.
Highlanders have been in devastating form felling everything that has been coming their way in their run-in to the championship podium. Youth internationals, Lucky Ndlela, Mgcini Sibanda and Mncedisi Gumede have been instrumental helping their side to flawless displays through out the season.
Defending champions Bantu Rovers were a pale shadow of the marauding class of 2010 who were invincible trailblazing their way to glory in a heavily one-sided championship. The invincibles found the going tough this season succumbing to moral sapping loses to Ajax Hotspurs and F.M.H Academy to all but throw in the towel. In yesterday's game against Makhandeni City Pirates they still had hope of taking the championship to the wire but the boys from Maunga were a stubborn lot in this exciting duel that kept the fans in Mpopoma spellbound with action swinging from one end to the other as both sides exhibited top drawer performances laced and punctuated by brilliance of individuals such as Tambudzai Ngulube and Chrispen Ncube of Bantu Rovers. Makhandeni's wonder kid Brian Ncube controlled the central mid-field with class of a veteran chocking all the moves of Bantu Rovers and seizing the opportunity to initiate dangerous moves for his side.
At the end of the day the draw was probably the fairest results for both side as none deserved to lose after such a hearty display. It was a painful end though to Bantu Rovers reign as Champions as they all but surrendered the coveted crown to their adversaries home away from home.
However Bantu Rovers still retain bright hopes of being crowned champions in the grueling marathon in the under16s where they have come from obscurity to stake a claim with two games to spare. Ironically this is the only age group that failed them in 2010 season denying them a hatrick of titles in the Metropolitan Junior League where they were pipped to the crown by invincible Ajax Hotspurs. It is ironic that Rovers reasserted themselves as championship contenders with a never say die attitude scoring twice in injury time to cancel out a two goal deficit to all but stun the defending champions Ajax Hotspurs in their own fortress koBango Mpopoma. The defending champions never recovered from that shock failing to ever record a win after that fateful day that firmly thrust Bantu Rovers back into contention. In yesterday's game, Tambudzai Ngulube was the chief tormentor of Makhandeni City Pirates finding the all important goal for Champions elect Rovers.
In the under 14s the promising youngstars displayed some flashes of brilliance with Honour Gombami's sibling Onwell a marvel to watch. however both side failed to take an initiative settling for a one all draw to all but nearly surrender the championship to Bosso who however need to ensure to win both their remaining matches to be sure of wrestling the crown to 2010 Champions Bantu Rovers who are breathing heavily on their neck. Highlanders failed to stretch their lead as they were held to a goalless draw by a determined Amalanda at Barbourfileds.
In the relegation dog fight, BSE Academy won the battle of Magwegwe giving Magwegwe North the bragging rights over Old Magwegwe with a top-notch display that saw them prevail 1-0 scorelines in the under 16s and 18s age groups only succumbing to Youngstars with a identical scoreline in the under 14s.
