A new club called GT Camp, that seeks to cater for Zimbabweans in Johannesburg has opened its doors in Yeoville, (Rocky Street and Bezuidenhout streets) next to Tandoor. This is a significant development for Zimbabweans since most of the clubs are mostly run or owned by West Africans. Now Zimbabweans are making their presence felt in a multi-billion entertainment industry which is solely dependent on the hard-earned cash of Zimbabwean diaspora. It is a significant development if Zim business people challenge the dominance of these Nigerians and Cameroonians.
The club is a breathe of fresh air, with a state of the art infrastructure. The sitting arrangement, the furniture, the floors and the well-positioned overhead flat screens (for soccer lovers) complete the story. It has been designed to replicate the hugely popular NewsCafe restaurants. GT Camp also boasts an advantageous outside overhead view of the surroundings. With elaborate outside sitting arrangements overlooking braai stands that send that unmistakable aroma of fresh braai chops and chicken on any typical weekend afternoon.
Moreover the VIP area is well positioned with its own separate toilets away from the mainstream side of the club. The VIP lounge is specifically designed and dedicated to those who want to mix business with pleasure. Talking tough business deals whilst listening to some soothing old school house music (1980s and 1990s) and typical afrojazz from the likes of Jimmy Dludlu, Caiphus Semenya, Abdul Ibrahim, Oliver Mtukudzi, Lovemore Majaivana, Dorothy Masuka, and the timeless Bhundu Boys , inter alia.
"This is a place where Zimbabweans should come for their meetings, braais, and socialising on any day of the week. On Saturdays and Sundays they will listen to their all time favourite songs from the previous era. Afrojazz is our speciality over the weekend, followed by old school house music before serious contemporary deep house music seal your night," said the resident DJ, B Spinner, as most of his fans call him from his days when he used to spin that wheel at Greys Inn, 4Js and Savannah Night clubs in Bulawayo.
The service is also a breathe of fresh air. Friendly bar men, waiters and security personnel are all very welcoming indeed.
On Wednesdays the place will offer Zim Nights, where all manner of Zim talents can showcase their stuff from rumba groups to poetry and vocal groups like Amakhosi Amahle. On Thursdays it is hardcore ragga reminiscent of the days of Dennis Wilson on Radio 3. On Fridays through Saturdays Sundays, it is Jazz, old school house and hardcore deep house. It is the intention of the owners to facilitate Zim based musicians to come and perform at the club for their Johannesburg fans. A list of top DJs has been lined up including the indefatigable DJ Oskido to come and paly at the club soon.
According to the co-club owner, now Zimbabweans have a place they can call home for their bespoke entertainment that is tailored for their unique needs. Who would not want to hear Lovemore Majaivana, Bhundu Boys, Oliver Mtukudzi and a plethora of international jazz artists on a cool weekend afternoon?
