Chief dies after collapse at Independence celebrations

Chief Mapungwana, born Aneas Mapungwana and serving as a Senator, has died following a sudden collapse during the national Independence Day celebrations held in Maphisa, Matabeleland South, on Saturday.
He was immediately rushed to the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH), where he was admitted for treatment. Despite efforts by medical staff, he passed away at around 2pm today.
His death was confirmed by acting Manicaland Provincial Director for Local Government Services, John Misi.
His death has sent shockwaves through both traditional leadership structures and political circles, where he was widely known for his dual role as a chief and legislator.
Details surrounding the cause of his collapse have not yet been made public.
