In yet another victory against the manufacturing and distribution of the illicit tototo brew, Bulawayo police have arrested another elderly Iminyela suburb woman and seized four litres of the alcoholic drink.
Charity Sibanda's arrest came hard on the heels of the nabbing of her competitor, Sinanzeni Tshabangu last week. The apprehension of the two has brought to total the seized quantity of the illegal brew to 10 litres!
Circumstances surronding the busting of the second plant are that on Wednesday last week, members of Neighbourhood Watch Committee (NWC) got a tip-off to the effect that Sibanda was manufacturing tototo at her house-cum-brewery.
The NWC members proceeded to the police where they alerted the law enforcers. Police then raided Sibanda's house and true to the word found FOUR litres of tototo whose alcohol content is believed to be around 95%, that was ready to hit the market. The woman was taken into custody and appeared before Western Commonage magistrate, Mr Richard Ramaboea. She was found guilty.
The tototo manufacturer, for the offence of supplying members of the public with the much dangerous brew, will perform 70 hours of community service. With the arrest of the two women who stay a few houses from each other, there are concerns among residents that there could be larger cartel.
"We are grateful that manufacturers of tototo have been arrested but what I fear most are the effects of this brew and you will find that the majority of people who drink it are the youths, which is not good for their health," said one resident.
