CID boss in court over fatal cop deployment

The Officer-In-Charge of Gutu CID, Inspector Edward Chiweta, has appeared before the Masvingo Magistrates Court facing charges of negligence of duty after allegedly redeploying a junior officer who was under suspension for murder, who later went on to fatally shoot a civilian.

Court proceedings heard that Inspector Chiweta authorised the return to duty of Constable Farai Simudzirai (43), despite the officer being suspended in connection with an ongoing murder case.

Prosecutors allege that this decision set the stage for a fatal incident on the Beitbridge–Masvingo Highway, where Simudzirai allegedly shot and killed a passenger travelling in the back of a Mazda B1800.

The victim, described by witnesses as an innocent commuter, died at the scene, sparking shock and concern within surrounding communities.

Simudzirai, formerly stationed with CID Karoi, was reportedly already facing a murder charge at the time of his redeployment, raising questions about internal police record-keeping and oversight procedures.

His return to operational duty has since triggered scrutiny over how suspension protocols were managed and why a senior officer approved his deployment.
