Harare man killed over US$1
5 hrs ago | Views
A man from Harare has tragically died from injuries inflicted during a dispute over a small sum of money, following a disagreement with his drinking mates over US$1 meant for change. Arnold Moses, one of the suspects involved in the assault, appeared before Harare magistrate Rufaro Panavanhu last week, charged with murder. He was remanded in custody and is expected to return to court in January.
Prosecutor Takudzwa Jambawu outlined the events leading to the death of the man, who has not been named. On April 12, the deceased was given US$10 by a person identified only as Soweto to buy beer, with instructions to return US$8 in change. However, when the deceased returned, he allegedly told Soweto that he had not yet collected the change.
Later, the deceased was sent once again to purchase beer. When he returned with empty beer bottles, he claimed the cashier had told him that the shop had run out of money. This led to a dispute, with the cashier insisting that he had no outstanding change to give.
A search of the deceased revealed US$7 in his pocket, but he was unable to explain the missing US$1. Tensions escalated, and the deceased was reportedly assaulted by his drinking mates, including Moses.
On April 13, the victim succumbed to the injuries sustained during the assault, leading to Moses' arrest and subsequent charges of murder.
The tragic incident highlights how a minor dispute over money escalated into violence, resulting in the loss of life. The case remains under investigation as authorities await further court proceedings.
