ZIFA addresses abuse of match officials

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has reiterated its uncompromising stance against verbal and physical abuse directed at match officials, declaring a zero-tolerance policy as part of its broader push to uphold the integrity and spirit of the game.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the country's football governing body emphasised the importance of sportsmanship, mutual respect, and dignity among all football stakeholders.

The reaffirmation comes in response to recent incidents that have drawn attention to the mistreatment of referees and other match officials during fixtures across the country.

"Match officials play a crucial role in upholding the laws of the game and must be afforded the respect and protection their role demands," ZIFA said.

The association warned that those who engage in abusive behaviour will face disciplinary action, including potential legal consequences.

"ZIFA will not hesitate to impose sanctions on those who breach acceptable conduct, including allowing the full weight of the law to take its course when necessary," the statement added.

The organisation appealed to clubs, fans, supporters' groups, and community leaders to champion a culture of tolerance and professionalism at all levels of the game.

"Disagreement with officiating decisions must never be used as justification for unruly conduct. Let us uphold the integrity of Zimbabwean football by safeguarding the well-being of all who make the game possible."

ZIFA's renewed focus on referee protection comes amid growing calls from within the local football community to address a spike in hostile behaviour towards officials, some of whom have reported threats and intimidation on and off the pitch.

As the local football season progresses, the association has vowed to strengthen enforcement mechanisms and ensure match-day environments remain safe and respectful for everyone involved.
