NATIONAL University of Science and Technology (Nust) dean of students Lobi Mlobiseni Sifobela died on Monday evening after he collapsed in his car a kilometre away from his house.
He was 66.
Nust director of information and public relations Felix Moyo yesterday confirmed Sifobela's death.
"Dr Sifobela collapsed and died on Monday evening around 1830hrs near his home after he had left the house," he said.
He said a gardener from a neighbour's house saw his car parked at the roadside a kilometre from his home.
This prompted the gardener to investigate after he suspected that Sifobela was in the car that had been parked at the roadside for a while.
"After the gardener was convinced that Sifobela was in the car, he immediately ran to the house to alert Sifobela's wife and the two opened the car door to discover that he had collapsed," Moyo said.
He immediately called an ambulance and police to the scene.
"Dr Sifobela was taken to United Bulawayo Hospital where he was pronounced dead," Moyo added. Sifobela was born on August 2 in 1947 in Mberengwa.
He attained a Bachelor of Arts Special Honours in Theology at the University of Birmingham School of Theology in 1979.
Sifobela attained a Master of Arts degree at the University of Birmingham in 1981 before attaining a Doctor of Philosophy at King's College University in London in 1985. In 1992 he joined Nust as dean of students, a post he held until the time of his death.
Sifobela is survived by his wife and four children.
