A Harare kombi driver has been sentenced to 30 months in prison after his reckless driving at a traffic intersection in Borrowdale was captured by a motorist and reported to police.
Harmony Duri (25) appeared before Harare magistrate Tapiwa Kuhudzai and was convicted after a full trial on charges of reckless driving.
The court heard that on February 20 at around 9:30am, Duri was driving a Toyota Hiace along Borrowdale Road heading south when he approached traffic lights near Borrowdale Village and Pomona Shops.
Instead of stopping, he drove through a red traffic light while carrying passengers, putting other road users at serious risk.
The incident was witnessed by a motorist, Luisa Patricia Townsend, who was travelling behind the kombi. She reportedly captured the offence on video and filed a police report, which led to Duri's arrest.
The State, represented by prosecutor Charlotte Chikoore, proved that Duri failed to obey a lawful traffic signal and violated road safety regulations.
In delivering the ruling, the court found his conduct unlawful and dangerous to public safety.
Duri was sentenced to 30 months imprisonment, with six months suspended on condition of good behaviour, leaving 24 months effective.
The case comes amid a growing number of convictions involving kombi drivers in Harare, as authorities intensify efforts to clamp down on reckless public transport behaviour and improve road safety compliance.
