The MDC-T deputy president's chauffer Friday appeared in court facing robbery charges after he allegedly assaulted Matabeleland North provincial chairperson's driver before stealing cash and snatching the Isuzu truck he was driving in the city centre last Saturday.
Witness Dube (37), Thokozani Khupe's driver, with his other six accomplices when he allegedly committed the offence appeared before Magistrate Sibongile Msipa at the Tredgold courts and will spend the weekend behind bars, pending his bail application on Monday.
Msipa said the plain robbery charges laid against Dube needed to be adjusted as the matter also involved a stolen vehicle.
Dube was represented by his lawyer, Emmanuel Mlalazi of Dube, Banda, Nzarayapenga and partners.
It is the state's case that on May 25 2014 at around 1300hrs at the corner of First Avenue and Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Street, Lameck Ndlovu, who drives Sengezo Tshabangu, was in the company of Zaccaria Nkomo and Sage Mguni, while driving the Isuzu KB250 pick-up truck.
He parked the vehicle while waiting to collect cash from a certain Sibanda on behalf of his boss, Tshabangu.
Sibanda came and gave Ndlovu the money and left him at the scene.
Two vehicles allegedly blocked Ndlovu's vehicle and Dube who was in the company of six other accused persons who are still at large disembarked from the cars and pulled him out of the Isuzu vehicle.
The gang allegedly started assaulting Ndlovu and Nkomo with clenched fists and kicked them all over their bodies.
Dube allegedly searched Ndlovu and took his Blackberry phone, $300 and the car keys for the truck.
He reportedly drove the truck away while his colleagues got into the other vehicles.
Ndlovu made a report to the police and was referred to the United Bulawayo Hospital for medical attention.
A follow-up was made leading to Dube's arrest.
The state alleges that the total value of cash and stolen items was $30 350. Nothing was recovered.
Tshabangu is linked to the MDC Renewal Team which is fronted by expelled secretary general, Tendai Biti while Khupe is said to be standing by the party's embattled leader, Morgan Tsvangirai.
