TWO people died after an elevator at the National Railways of Zimbabwe building in Bulawayo developed a fault and broke loose, plunging eight floors down.
Chief police spokesperson, senior assistant commissioner Charity Charamba confirmed that the accident happened on Friday, but was only discovered on Saturday.
She said an NRZ accountant, Elizabeth Mlangeni, got stuck on the eighth floor on Friday afternoon after working hours.
Mlangeni then phoned the elevator company and a technician identified as Masina was dispatched.
Upon arrival, the technician is said to have managed to gain access of the lift, but on trying to release it, lost grip and fell to the basement of the building.
Charamba said the alarm was only raised yesterday morning by Mlangeni's family after she failed to come home from work.
Fire brigade and the police attended to the scene. The 28-floor NRZ building is the tallest in Bulawayo.
NRZ spokesperson Fanuel Masikati could not be reached for comment as he was said to have travelled to his rural home.
