A 27-year-old man from Bwazi, Monozi village under chief Masunga appeared before Guruve magistrate Artwel Sanyatwe for hunting and killing an elephant without a valid licence.

Godsave Machisa (27) was jailed for twelve months after he pleaded not guilty to killing a male elephant worth $50 000 without a valid licence.

The court heard that sometime in July Machisa hunted and killed an elephant using a borrowed 303 rifle serial number 18235.

A syndicate of game rangers from Parks and Wildlife got a tip off on 10 September of the killed elephant and proceeded to Machisi's homestead where they caught him unaware and he admitted to the charge leading to his arrest.

In a related case Enackie Chipara (56) was slapped with $100 fine or risk 30 days behind bars if he fails to pay for giving Machisi his riffle.

He was charged for contravening Section 28 of the Firearm act 10.09 (failure to safe guard a fire arm).

Public prosecutor Ms Venesencia Musiiwa told the court that Chipara gave his 303 riffle to Machisi who went to Tututu village Mushumbi in the bush where he shot an elephant to death.
