Two policemen from Pumula North station in Bulawayo who are accused of torturing a city woman during investigations on Wednesday appeared in court facing torture charges.
Last week Bulawayo24.com reported that Constables Tinevimbo Shoko of Nkulumane and Tazvitya Mudzingwa of Emakhandeni tortured Mankazanyana Moyo in while investigating a case of fraud involving R1000 in October last year.
The two appeared before Western Commonage magistrates, Themba Chimiso and pleaded not guilty
They were remanded out of custody to February 2.
The court heard that on October 18, 2011, Moyo of Pumula East was summoned to Pumula North Police station by Shoko to solve a dispute between her and two women only identified as NaFlorence and NaMaNdlovu.
Moyo was allegedly interrogated by Shoko on allegations of fraud which she denied.
Shoko is alleged to have assaulted her twice under her foot using a baton stick.
Moyo later reported the matter to police at West Commonage who gave her a letter to go to Mpilo Hospital where a medical doctor compiled a report detailing her injuries.
Shoko and Mudzingwa were later arrested and an assault docket under Pumula CR 34/01/12 was opened.
In court Moyo said "He (Shoko) told me to remove my shoes and ordered me to lift my foot up before assaulting me twice using a button stick.
Later came Mudzingwa who also slapped me on the ear and eye after he had left the gun he was carrying somewhere," she said.
Moyo said she had a cellphone which she had set an alarm to alert her when to take tablets since she is on medication.
"When the alarm rang Shoko took my phone and switched it off saying I am not allowed to talk on the phone. He also insulted me saying people like me die in cells. I suffered a swollen foot and eye because of the assault, and the medical report gives details of the assault," she said.
Mudzingwa said the medical report does not reveal who assaulted her and it was unfounded for her to claim that he and Shoko assaulted her.
