A 32-YEAR-OLD man is lucky to be alive after a beer brawl turned bloody when he was stabbed twice for refusing to buy beer at Sivalo Business Centre last week on Saturday.
Mbonisi Mabuza of Chief Sivalo Village in Nkayi was rushed to St Luke's Hospital after his stomach was ripped open by angry beer buddies who felt that he had short-changed them.
A barman at a bottle store at Sivalo Business Centre who identified himself as Paul Nkomo said Mabuza was stabbed by one of four friends that he was drinking with over the weekend.
"These guys were taking turns to buy each other rounds of beer and I was serving them. Everyone bought two rounds of beer and the one who was stabbed was supposed to buy the last two rounds at around 11pm," said Nkomo.
When it was his turn Mabuza said it was late and his wife was calling him at home since it was a very cold weekend. As such he had to leave the group, calling it a night.
One of the friends whom sources identified as a Jabu is alleged to have ordered him to buy the last round of the wise waters before leaving.
An altercation allegedly erupted after Mabuza resisted buying the beer.
"He stood up and headed for the door, shouting obscenities on his way out," said Nkomo.
According to Nkomo, Jabu then followed him outside and demanded money and they started fighting. Mabuza then assaulted Jabu when the argument degenerated into a fistfight.
Another beer buddy whom a source identified as Lameck who had remained inside is said to have come out and tried to stop the fight but was insulted by Mabuza who told him to stay out of it.
Out of anger, Lameck allegedly stabbed Mabuza in the stomach and on the arm. Mabuza bled profusely and became unconscious, leading to the team fleeing from the scene.
Mabuza was rushed to a clinic by good Samaritans before he was referred to St Luke's Hospital where he is undergoing treatment.
Matabeleland North police spokesperson inspector Siphiwe Makonese could not be reached for comment on the matter.
