THREE security guards, who allegedly opened fire on gold panners near Arcturus Mine in Goromonzi on Sunday, injuring four, yesterday appeared before magistrate Florence Chakanyika facing four counts of attempted murder.
Learnmore Matangira (29), Earnest Kavhu (39) and George Mahufa (57) all of Braising Security Company, were remanded in custody to September 18 for trial.
According to court papers, on September 2 at around 8am, about 30 artisanal miners were panning gold at Goromonzi Rural District Council's Arcturus Mine compound when five armed Braising Security guards arrived in a Mazda B1800 pickup.
The security guards approached the gold panners and when they were about 30 metres away, they allegedly opened fire and injured four panners. The accused persons immediately left the scene and retreated to their offices at Arcturus Mine.
The injured were ferried by their colleagues to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals for treatment where they are still being attended to.
They were identified as Winston Mukandawire (26) of Council Compound, Tatenda Gukwe (30), Wilson Mural (29) all of Goromonzi and Tinashe Kanyemba of Epworth, Harare.
Kanyemba's condition is said to be critical while the other three are reportedly stable.
