The Media Institution for Southern Africa (MISA) has urged Civil Society Organization (CSOs) to take part in increasing awareness on the Data Protection Act.
The call was made during a workshop conducted by MISA in partnership with Mateleland Institute of Human Rights ( MIHR) in Bulawayo recently.
Several CSOs such as Girls Table, Community compassion Care Trust, Youth Empowerment Associations among others participated at the workshop meant to discuss the Data Protection Act.
MISA's Legal and Informations Communication Technology (ICT) policy Officer Nompilo Simanje said there is a need for individuals to be very active in promoting their Data protection and privacy.
"Individuals 'promotion of Data protection and Privacy can be done through ensuring that they do not share their sensitive data, personal identifying information on public platforms. We noted so many people that share their phone numbers, home addresses and other self identifying information in online public spaces," she said.
She said they should make sure that information is accessed by people who are intended to access it.
"In most cases those publishing their personal information are not able to regulate who uses their personal information and for what other purposes," she said.
According to the Government Gazette, Data Protection Act was officially introduced as an Act last year on 3 December.
