'Tshabangu a threat to democracy'

The Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) interim secretary-general, Sengezo Tshabangu, has come under criticism for recalling the party's Members of Parliament and councillors without the party's consent. Tshabangu has stated that the recalled party members will not participate in the upcoming by-elections scheduled for December 9 this year.
Human rights activist and founder of Project Vote 263, Youngerson Matete, has accused Tshabangu of undermining the will of the people and weakening the CCC, labeling his actions as a threat to democracy. Matete expressed concern that Tshabangu's actions could reverse the progress made during the 2023 elections and potentially lead to constitutional amendments by the ruling Zanu-PF.
Matete called on the CCC and its leader, Nelson Chamisa, to provide strong leadership to address the situation and urged dialogue as the way forward to avoid a party split.
The CCC is facing criticism for not taking more assertive action to protect the rights of its supporters. Zimbabwe Election Advocacy Trust director Ignatious Sadziwa also recommended dialogue as the best option to achieve a peaceful resolution.
The ruling Zanu-PF party is seeking a two-thirds majority in Parliament through the upcoming by-elections, which would grant it the authority to amend the Constitution.
