Bosso striker favourite for Golden Boot
3 hrs ago | Views
Highlanders striker Lynoth Chikuhwa has surged to the top of the Premier Soccer League's Golden Boot race, reaching an impressive 15 goals following his hat-trick against Greenfuel on Sunday at Barbourfields Stadium. The standout performance not only powered Highlanders to a 4-0 victory but also marked the first time a Bosso player scored three goals in a match in nearly a decade, since Knox Mutizwa's 2015 hat-trick against How Mine in a 5-1 win.
Chikuhwa's success this season is a significant improvement from last year, where he scored just three goals under former coach Baltemar Brito. Now, with Highlanders coach Kelvin Kaindu's guidance, he is leading the league's scoring charts and has sparked hope of breaking the elusive 20-goal mark—a feat last achieved by Evans Chikwaikwai with 23 goals in 2009 and Norman Maroto with 22 goals in 2010.
Kaindu expressed confidence in Chikuhwa's potential to clinch the Golden Boot. "In the game against Greenfuel, all the assists came from Brighton Ncube, who even when he could have scored, prioritized setting up Chikuhwa. This shows the unity in the team to help Chikuhwa walk away with this accolade at the end of the season," Kaindu said. "It will be good for us."
Trailing Chikuhwa in the scoring race are Yadah's Khama Billiat and CAPS United's William Manondo, who each have 12 goals. Last year's Golden Boot winner, Takunda Benhura, claimed the award with 13 goals, while Manondo won the accolade in 2022 with 17 goals.
Historically, Zimbabwean football has seen incredible individual scoring performances, most notably by Warriors and Dynamos legend Moses Chunga, who holds the post-independence record of 30 league and 16 cup goals in 1986. That season, Chunga was crowned Soccer Star of the Year after scoring 10 double strikes and three hat-tricks.
Highlanders fans and Zimbabwean football enthusiasts are hopeful that Chikuhwa's prolific season may soon place him among such esteemed records, as he pushes closer to setting a new benchmark for Bosso and Premier League scorers.
