Build One South Africa (BOSA) leader Mmusi Maimane has urged the South African government to take a tougher stance against Zimbabwe's ruling party, ZANU PF, accusing it of exporting crisis into the region.

Writing on his X (formerly Twitter) account, the former Democratic Alliance leader said South Africa must strengthen its border controls and confront the root causes of migration rather than focusing only on its effects.

"We need strong border control and common sense to handle the immigration crisis created by ZANU PF and Frelimo," Maimane posted.

He further urged Pretoria to abandon what he described as an unnecessary loyalty to Zimbabwe's leadership.

"We need to deal with the root cause without fear and without this notion that we must as a country be loyal to ZANU PF and Mnangagwa," he said.

South Africa currently hosts hundreds of thousands of Zimbabwean migrants, many of whom fled economic hardship and political instability. A significant number are believed to have entered through unofficial border crossings in search of work and better living conditions.

Maimane's remarks add to growing calls within South Africa for tougher immigration policies and a reevaluation of the country's stance towards Harare's ruling elite.
