President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa has relieved Winston Chitando of his Cabinet duties and immediately appointed Polite Kambamura as the new Minister of Mines and Mining Development.
According to an official communication from the Office of the President and Cabinet, Chitando's removal was effected under Section 340(1)(f), read together with Section 108(1)(a) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe.
"His Excellency the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Dr. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, has in terms of Section 340, Subsection (1f), as read with Section 108, Subsection (1a) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe, removed Winston Chitando as Cabinet Minister with immediate effect," the statement said.
The Presidency did not immediately give reasons for Chitando's dismissal.
Shortly after announcing the removal, Mnangagwa named Polite Kambamura as the new Mines Minister, in terms of Section 104(1) of the Constitution.
"In terms of Section 104, Subsection 1 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe, His Excellency the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Dr. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa has appointed Polite Kambamura as Minister of Mines and Mining Development," read the notice.
The leadership change comes at a pivotal time for Zimbabwe's mining sector, which is central to the country's economic growth strategy and foreign currency earnings. Kambamura, who previously served as Deputy Minister in the same portfolio, assumes office with immediate effect and is expected to oversee ongoing mining reforms, expansion of lithium and platinum production, and regulatory adjustments amid increasing global interest in Zimbabwe's mineral resources.
More details are expected as the Office of the President and Cabinet releases further statements regarding the transition.
