Zimbabwe today unveiled its National Health One Health Strategic Plan 2026-2030, a blueprint designed to strengthen cross-sectoral collaboration and coordination across human, animal, plant, and environmental health sectors. The plan, launched in Harare, draws lessons from the country's successful Whole-of-Government response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa, in the foreword to the strategic plan, emphasised that the "One Health" approach recognises the interconnectedness of human, animal, plant, and ecosystem health. He said the strategy seeks to address complex, interlinked health challenges through a Whole-of-Government and Whole-of-Society approach, ensuring coordinated action at the highest levels.
"Zimbabwe's National One Health Strategic Plan 2026-2030 seeks to strengthen coordination and collaboration across these sectors from the highest level. The plan provides a roadmap to address interconnected health challenges through a Whole-of-Government and Whole-of-Society Approach," President Mnangagwa said.
The plan's development was informed by science-based local, regional, and global One Health strategies, as well as lessons from Zimbabwe's Covid-19 response, which was coordinated by the Office of the President and Cabinet. The blueprint outlines governance structures, high-level coordination mechanisms, and clear strategies for multi-sectoral collaboration, aiming to build resilient and sustainable One Health systems.
President Mnangagwa directed all relevant ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) responsible for human, animal, and environmental health to implement the plan, urging action beyond traditional sectoral boundaries. "I therefore direct and urge all MDAs responsible for human, animal, and environmental health to respond beyond traditional sectoral boundaries through strengthened multi-sectoral collaboration and unified policy action at all levels," he said.
The President added that adopting a One Health approach is vital to achieving Zimbabwe's Vision 2030 aspirations of a prosperous, upper middle-income society, ensuring no person or place is left behind.
The launch marks a significant step in consolidating Zimbabwe's efforts to integrate health governance, strengthen preventive measures, and ensure that the nation is better prepared for future public health challenges.
