Gwanda municipality has stepped up efforts to enforce hygiene and cleanliness regulations in the town as part of a broader strategy to attract investment and promote development in the mining hub.

Mayor Alderman Thulani Moyo said the local authority is committed to maintaining a clean environment following the first Presidential Clean-up Campaign of the year, held in Ward 1, Gwanda Urban, last Friday. He urged all stakeholders to actively participate and embrace sound environmental health practices.

The event saw the participation of security forces, government departments, residents, and other local stakeholders. President Emmerson Mnangagwa has designated the first Friday of every month as National Clean-up Day, encouraging citizens nationwide to contribute to maintaining clean surroundings.

Mayor Moyo emphasized the link between a clean environment, public health, and economic growth. "As we start a new year, let's adopt a culture of cleanliness and ownership of the state of our environment, as this has a significant impact on our well-being and livelihoods. If our environment isn't clean, this can lead to diseases, which in turn affects productivity," he said.

He added that a dirty town can deter potential investors. Quoting President Mnangagwa, Alderman Moyo said: "'ilizwe lakhiwa ngabanikazibalo' — as we start this year, let's build our town through cleanliness. Desist from littering, and let's adopt proper waste management for better outcomes. This is how we build our community."

The Mayor called on all local stakeholders to participate regularly in the clean-up initiative, underlining that collective responsibility is key to sustainable development in Gwanda.
