GWANDA - More than 100 indigenous and exotic trees were planted at a homestead in Ntepe, Gwanda District, last month as part of National Tree Planting Day, commemorated under the theme "Trees and Forests for Ecosystem Restoration and Improved Livelihoods."

District Development Coordinator Ayakhiwe Moyo said the annual event plays a crucial role in promoting environmental awareness and restoring degraded ecosystems across Zimbabwe.

Speaking during the ceremony, Moyo emphasised the importance of community involvement.

"This is not just about putting a tree in the ground; it is about securing the future one tree at a time," he said.

He added that tree planting contributes to climate‑change mitigation while offering long‑term economic benefits to communities.

"Forests are the backbone of our ecosystems. By planting today, we're investing in better livelihoods," Moyo said.

The event was attended by representatives from the Forestry Commission, Agritex and members of the local community.

Some of the trees were symbolically named after family members and loved ones to strengthen personal connections to environmental stewardship.

Soon after the final tree was planted, heavy rains fell - a moment many participants interpreted as a blessing for the day's environmental efforts.
