The Catholic Church in Zimbabwe is facing public scrutiny following a high-profile donation to St Gerard Parish in Borrowdale, Harare. Father Victor Bushu, the priest-in-charge of the parish, accepted a financial contribution of US$250,000 along with a vehicle valued at around US$75,000 from prominent businessman Wicknell Chivayo.
The donation has sparked debate among some congregants and within church circles, with questions raised over its appropriateness. A senior Catholic priest, who spoke anonymously, described the contribution as controversial, noting that the Church typically exercises caution regarding the sources of donations. He also highlighted concerns about the Redemptorist order, which manages the parish and observes a vow of poverty, receiving the gift. The priest called for clearer guidance from Church leadership on such matters.
Chivayo explained that the donation was made in memory of his late mother, Canasia Chivayo, a member of the parish, as a tribute to her dedication to the Catholic faith. He stated that the gesture was intended to honour her commitment, particularly on the occasion of her memorial.
Some public figures and religious leaders have previously declined donations from Chivayo, including musician Thomas Mapfumo and Eunor Guti, the widow of the founder of ZAOGA Forward in Faith Ministries. In this case, records show that Father Bushu collected a Toyota Hilux vehicle from Exquisite Car Sale, a company owned by Chivayo, while the US$250,000 was deposited into the parish's account on the same day.
Several anonymous parishioners told Masvingo Mirror that they were disappointed by the development, suggesting that clergy should align their actions more closely with Church teachings. Harare Diocese Vicar General Father Ephraim Murwira declined to comment, saying the issue falls under the Redemptorist priests who manage the parish. Father Kenneth Macharaga, who oversees the order, was not immediately available, and Zimbabwe Catholic Bishops Conference Secretary General Father Tryvis Moyo also declined to comment, noting that the matter is handled at the parish level.
Chivayo's personal assistant, Simon Kazhanje, confirmed the donation and emphasized that Chivayo's social media statement reflected the intent behind the contribution. Known for making high-value donations to churches, musicians, and other public figures, Chivayo has been the subject of public discussion regarding his business activities and political affiliations, though he has not publicly responded to criticisms in this instance.
In his statement, Chivayo said: "Yesterday we marked the fifth memorial of my late mother. Since her passing in 2021, it has arguably been the most difficult period of my life. On this special occasion, I was reminded of how deeply she loved her church and how the church recognised her unwavering dedication to the Catholic faith."
