ZPA warns motorists against crossing flooded rivers

Zimbabwe Passengers Association (ZPA) secretary‑general Paul Makiwa has urged motorists across the country to stop attempting to cross flooded rivers, warning that such actions continue to claim lives.

The call comes as several people have died in recent weeks after trying to cross flooded rivers, either on foot or in vehicles. On 22 January, nine people drowned in Filabusi, Matabeleland South, after a Toyota Noah was swept away while attempting to cross a flooded river.

Makiwa said persistent heavy rains have left many rivers swollen and dangerous.

“We would like to appeal to all our road users to avoid and stop crossing flooded rivers. Remember, some of our air filters are beneath the engines, and once they suck in water, the engine cuts off and the vehicle becomes stuck,” he said.

“In other cases, the surface becomes slippery and tyres lose grip. Did you know that tyres can float on water? That alone puts lives at high risk.”

He added that some bridges may already be damaged, swept away or split, making it extremely dangerous to attempt crossing when they are submerged.

“Therefore, drivers, let us avoid and stop crossing flooded rivers since we all live once,” Makiwa said.
