The Zimbabwe Liberated Girl in Action (ZLGCA), a youth affiliate of the ruling party ZANU PF, has launched a five-day free driving lessons and road safety training programme targeting girls and women in Bulawayo.

The initiative, held in partnership with the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe, began on Monday and is set to conclude on Friday.

Speaking at the programme's launch, ZLGCA chairperson Ms Anna Mabhena said the initiative goes beyond teaching driving rules, aiming to empower women while promoting road safety.

"The programme is far more than learning the rules of the road, but is about empowering girls and women. ZLGCA is concerned by the increased road traffic fatalities, especially during the just-ended festive season, and we felt compelled to act. Road safety training and learners' licence training are crucial in reducing these avoidable, tragic road traffic accidents," Ms Mabhena said.

She added: "We are proud of our partnership with the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe to launch this free provisional driving and road safety training programme for Bulawayo girls and women."

A total of 170 girls and women have registered for the training, which will equip them with both practical driving skills and safety knowledge.

Ms Mabhena also highlighted the programme's alignment with President Mnangagwa's vision for women's empowerment, saying: "President Mnangagwa has consistently championed the empowerment of women as a pillar of the Second Republic. When we equip a girl or a woman with skills, we are giving them a lifeline to empower themselves and contribute to the development of the country."

The initiative reflects a growing focus on youth and women empowerment in Zimbabwe, while addressing critical concerns over road safety.
