The nation's media fraternity is in mourning following the death of veteran journalist John Masuku, affectionately known as "Ndwandwe," his Nguni clan name. He passed away at the age of 70 in the early hours of Friday, 13 February 2026, coinciding with World Radio Day - a day Masuku celebrated with unmatched passion and dedication throughout his career.
Masuku's illustrious career in journalism spanned 52 years, beginning in 1974 at the Rhodesian Broadcasting Corporation (now ZBC) Mbare Studios in Harare. Over the decades, he became a towering figure in Zimbabwean media, known not only for his storytelling but also for mentoring generations of journalists and serving communities across the country.
The Masuku family confirmed his sudden passing at his home in Mabelreign. Veteran journalist Funny Mushava shared the news, noting that despite having a known heart condition, Masuku had been in good health and engaged in his usual daily activities. The unexpected loss has left family, friends, and colleagues reeling.
"Mourners are gathered at his residence at Number 1 Pat Palmer Owen Drive, Cotswold Hills, Mabelreign," the family said in a statement. "Today marks World Radio Day, a day that held special meaning for Mr Masuku, who loved radio deeply. His passing on this day is a poignant reminder of his lifelong dedication to the medium."
