Nigerian forward Benjamin Odeugun scored the decisive goal as Highlanders FC edged rivals Dynamos FC 1-0 in the Jairos Jiri Cup charity match at Barbourfields Stadium this afternoon.
Odeugun struck in the 50th minute to hand Bosso victory in a thrilling encounter filled with passion, pride and pure football entertainment. Dynamos fought bravely throughout, but in the end the silverware belonged to Highlanders.
The win marks the first major trophy for Highlanders since the appointment of head coach Benjani Mwaruwari, who enjoyed a dream start to his reign by defeating the club's fiercest rivals in his first outing in charge.
Played under gloomy, rain-soaked conditions, the tightly contested clash still drew thousands of supporters who braved the weather to back their teams and the charitable cause behind the match.
Proceeds from the encounter will be directed to the Jairos Jiri Association, founded in 1950 by philanthropist Jairos Jiri to provide care, rehabilitation and vocational training for people with disabilities.
When the Jairos Jiri Association was established, Highlanders were already 24 years old, having been founded in 1926, while Dynamos had yet to come into existence - adding rich historical significance to a fixture that continues to unite communities decades later.
Beyond the rivalry and result, the afternoon once again highlighted football's power to bring people together in the spirit of compassion and social responsibility.
