A Gweru provincial magistrate has issued a warrant of arrest for a Chinese national who allegedly skipped court after being charged with undermining the authority of the President.

Jiang Bingqin (43) is now on the run after failing to appear before the Gweru Magistrates' Court to answer to allegations stemming from a confrontation on a Midlands farm late last year.

According to the State, the incident occurred on December 29, 2025, when Jiang allegedly clashed with Nyengeterai Mapuranga, a farmer from Kinsburg along Matobo Road, over suspected unauthorised mining activities on the property.

The court heard that during the altercation, Mapuranga advised Jiang that the land had been allocated to him by President Emmerson Mnangagwa and that he held a valid offer letter confirming his claim.

Prosecutors allege that the exchange turned hostile, with Jiang ordering the farmer to vacate the property. It is further alleged that Jiang made remarks deemed contemptuous of the Head of State, reportedly telling Mapuranga to "go and stay with your foolish president in Harare and leave my claims."

The matter was reported to police, leading to Jiang's arrest and placement on remand on bail. However, his subsequent failure to attend court prompted the magistrate to issue a warrant of arrest, effectively declaring him a fugitive.

Authorities have since launched a manhunt, and the case is expected to proceed once Jiang is apprehended.

The development comes amid growing complaints from landholders over illegal mining activities, land encroachment and disputes involving some foreign nationals operating without clear authority, placing increased pressure on regulators and law enforcement agencies to address the concerns.
