The Zimbabwe Council for Higher Education (ZIMCHE) and the United Methodist Church (UMC) have distanced themselves from the operations of the Abel Tendekai Muzorewa University, which is reportedly operating illegally in Rusape.

ZIMCHE issued a warning stating that the institution is unregistered, not accredited, and has no legal authority to operate as a university, enrol students, or advertise academic programmes. The council urged the public and prospective students to verify the accreditation status of any institution before enrolling, warning that non-compliant operators may face civil and criminal action.

The UMC also confirmed that the proposed institution has no affiliation with the church and is not using its premises, describing it as a private family initiative.

When contacted, Mr Ernest Muzorewa, who is spearheading the project, initially declined a full interview and cautioned against rushing the story, saying sensitive interests were involved.

The university has been circulating social media messages advertising student and staff accommodation, despite not disclosing a confirmed campus location.

According to ZIMCHE, any attempt to operate or enrol students without accreditation is unlawful and undermines Zimbabwe's higher education regulatory framework.

The proposed institution has previously stated plans to open in 2026, with operations expected to begin at Mabvuwo Mountain in Rusape, alongside temporary use of local facilities while construction is underway.
