The Zimbabwe National Boxing and Wrestling Control Board (ZNBWCB) has confirmed that professional boxer Ndodana Ncube is under medical supervision following a bout in South Africa last Friday.
In a statement released on Sunday, the board said Ncube was admitted to hospital for precautionary observation after competing in a contest sanctioned by Boxing South Africa in Middelburg, Mpumalanga.
The fight, promoted by Ilanga Boxing Promotions, initially appeared to be a successful outing for the Zimbabwean fighter, who secured victory by majority decision.
"The Zimbabwe National Boxing and Wrestling Control Board wishes to inform the public, stakeholders, and the boxing fraternity of a medical situation involving Zimbabwean professional boxer, Mr Ndodana Ncube, following a bout in South Africa," the statement read.
The board emphasised that all medical and regulatory requirements had been met prior to the fight.
"Prior to the bout, Mr Ncube was duly cleared to compete in accordance with all applicable medical and regulatory requirements, both locally and under the jurisdiction of Boxing South Africa."
However, after the bout, Ncube was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.
"Following the conclusion of the contest, in which Mr Ncube secured a victory by majority decision, he was admitted to hospital for precautionary medical observation and care. We are advised that all established medical protocols are being strictly followed by the relevant South African authorities."
ZNBWCB said it is maintaining close communication with its South African counterparts and the attending medical team to monitor his condition.
"The ZNBWCB is in close communication with Boxing South Africa and the attending medical team and has been assured that Mr Ncube is receiving appropriate medical attention. At this stage, he remains under professional medical supervision, and further updates will be communicated as they become available."
The board reiterated that athlete welfare remains a top priority and appealed for privacy.
"The health and safety of all athletes remains our highest priority. We kindly request the public and members of the media to respect the privacy of Mr Ncube and his family during this time."
No further details on his condition have been released.
