Zimbabwe's men's 4x400m relay team delivered a historic performance at the Lefika International Relays in Gaborone, Botswana, finishing second in a national record time of 3 minutes 00.69 seconds.

The quartet of Gerren Muwishi, Dennis Hove, Leeford Zuze and Thandazani Ndhlovu eclipsed the long-standing national record of 3 minutes 00.79 seconds set in 1997.

The impressive run not only secured a podium finish but also significantly boosted Zimbabwe's chances of qualifying for the upcoming World Relays set for May 2 and 3 in Botswana.

Heading into the race, Zimbabwe were ranked 24th on the global Top List  -  the final qualifying position  -  with a time of 3 minutes 03.42 seconds. Their new mark is expected to lift them into a more secure qualification zone ahead of the April 5 cut-off.

Kenya won the race in 3 minutes 00.34 seconds, while Nigeria placed third in 3 minutes 02.98 seconds.

Team captain Muwishi praised his teammates for their determination and execution.

"The boys did well. We knew from our performance in Lesotho that Lefika would be something special, so we went out there and delivered. The national record was icing on the cake," he said.

He added that while the record was a major achievement, the team remains focused on the bigger goal.

"We spoke just after the race not to let the time distract us. The bigger goal is the World Relays. Qualification means nothing if we don't perform on the world stage."

Zimbabwe previously qualified for the World Relays last year in China but were disqualified on a technicality, a setback the team is eager to overcome this time around.

The qualification window closes on April 5, with World Athletics expected to confirm the final list of participating teams on April 7.

National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe president Tendayi Tagara said plans are already in motion to prepare the team for the global event.

"The performance was impressive. We want the team to go into camp early once qualification is confirmed and compete in build-up events, including the Grand Prix in Botswana and the National Championships," he said.

Zimbabwe also fielded a mixed 4x100m relay team  -  featuring Rutendo Vushe, Samkeliso Ndebele, Daniel Magogo and Methembe Tshuma  -  which finished sixth in 42.97 seconds in their debut appearance.

With momentum building and qualification within reach, Zimbabwe's relay teams are now firmly focused on making a mark on the world stage in May.
